CarlWood Family

The lumber business has been in the blood of the Carl family for more than half a century. After spending 27 years managing a hardwood company where he forged deep relationships with log providers, government officials and industry professionals, Robert (Bob) Carl struck out with his wife Sylvia and incorporated CarlWood Lumber Limited in 1984. Their goal was to create a business based on its reputation and ability to deliver high quality hardwood and softwood lumber to its customers, with dependable delivery schedules and competitive pricing. Today Bob has over 50 years of lumber business experience and serves as the patriarch of CarlWood.

The second generation of CarlWood, Doug Carl serves today as the President and General Manager of the company. Committed to strong principles of excellence for his customers, Doug has been with his father’s company for 10 years. Prior to joining CarlWood, Doug graduated from BCIT - Forest Products and worked for two decades for a cedar remanufacturer and as a softwood export lumber trader. His vision is to take CarlWood into new markets and to spread the word about the environmental, construction and aesthetic benefits of using Canadian hardwood and softwood lumber.

Cathy Carl, the wife of Doug, has watched as CarlWood has grown from its smaller incarnations into the company that it is today. As a sounding board for new ideas, her insight is valuable and always appreciated. The son of Doug and Cathy, Stuart is the first of CarlWood’s third generation. He’s learning the business from the ground up, working with the CarlWood crew and learning the industry with the help of the rest of the team.
